Go By Winners, Week 6
These two tots belong to a good friend of mine who incorporated the 1world2wheels art into the jersey design. The kids are sporting the “Support Global Cooling” and “Weigh less, Wait less” jerseys in kiddly sizes. Word is they’ve not taken the jerseys off for days and they want to ride their bikes all the time.
I haven’t convinced the buyers that either jersey would sell for kids. Any thoughts on that?
So last weeks winners in the Go By Bike Challenge are:
August 18 - Jane Rogers
August 19 - John Fossett
August 20 - Lindsay Stonebrook
August 21 - Tom Duvall
August 22 - Rita Shorba
August 23 - Kyle McGinnis
August 24 - Maria Novilla
Here’s a question for all of you Challenge takers: how is it going? Are you replacing your car trips by bike and what’s it been like? Inquiring minds want to know!

Dennis Jacko Says:
I had made a commitment to ride 10-15 miles a night and that is up to 15-30 miles after work 4-5 days a week. This week I started riding to work which is 7 miles round trip. So I guess it is going better than I thought it would. I started riding for health reasons this year and it is working. Just tonight I took the movies back and instead of the car I took my bike, 10 miles round trip, it is getting easier and quite enjoyable. Thanks, DJ

Ride is going great. Here in sunny Florida we’ve been getting a bit of rainy weather, but that only makes the ride more challenging. I’m up to about 150 miles per week including Saturday. People ask me how I can ride after a long hard day at work? My answer is that I just get on the bike an go. It takes me about 5 minutes longer to get home on my bike than in a car so I really don’t feel bad riding.

It’s been great! After about a month on a department store ten-speed I upgraded to a Trek 7.2fx. My work schedule permits me to commute two-to-three days per week. The ride is invigorating (especially now that the morning temps are a little cooler) and this is the best exercise I’ve gotten in years.

While initially only pledging 20 miles a week, figuring riding to work once a week and a couple of errands, I’ve actually been bitten by the Go By Bike bug! After only about 2 months I now ride to my local office whenever I am there and have added trips to the grocery store and farmers market. I’m even looking into a car cover for my car, because it spends more time in the driveway than on the road.
My family has even become inspired. My wife is now starting to ride with the kids on small, local errands, while my oldest son has started riding his bike to school every day. Thank you for a little push in the right direction. I don’t think our family will ever view our cars and our bikes the same way again!
Sally Robertson Says:
I bike to work everyday (about 18 miles RT). It’s great! Any ideas how to get high students to bike more, instead of wanting to drive a car?
Thanks for the site.
Rebecca Says:
All I can say is it’s great to see people enjoying the freedom that a bike gives. As far as how to get college students riding, well, there’s Ripon College for an example. Ripon offered to give incoming students a bike, helmet and lock if they left their car at home. So far they’ve had around 60 kids sign up for this–which is 60 less parking spaces they need to maintain and/or build.
I think anything that helps young adults feel like it’s the norm is a good thing. Meaning, provide an incentive to get a lot of people riding so newbies can feel like they aren’t alone and have support.
Tracie Ambrose Says:
I challenged to ride to church, the grocery, errands around town, and for exercise. So far, I’m getting in around 12 miles a day. I ride for exercise, and while I’m out on the ride I do the groceries and other errands. People at church are always amazed that I ride the 2 miles to church. I tell them that 2 mi. one way is like a trip down the block now. I’m still not riding to work yet. It is 20 miles with huge hills. Maybe next summer. My bike is a Diamondback Mira Vista. It has fold up baskets and a triler hitch.
Jen Says:
Hey Rebecca,
I know that my Go By Bike will get a tad easier now that my kids are back in school and I can bike the errands myself. Any thoughts on adding a section to the 1W2W site on how to handle things like: transporting groceries, going to the post office with a box to mail, etc. . .
So far I am using a backpack for a lot of stuff but I am such a Go By Bike newbie and used to “bike for training” that there is a lot I don’t know. I know there are a lot of tools out there to help with these purposes I just don’t know about them. A resource on the site could help answer those “obstacles” that people might have, causing them to turn back to the car.
